Embroidery: Collage Art Work

In anticipation of the upcoming Turtle Creek Fine Art Show in Dallas in 2 weeks, I've decided to stitch a selection of collage pieces.  They will be good for those customers wanting to buy a piece to take home with them.  I'll have larger pieces too but not everyone can commit to those at first sight.

These collage pieces will be predominantly sewn on the embroidery machine.  The embroidery machine is basically a computerized sewing machine.  It can only stitch the program it can read.  I can buy digitized files and I do buy those for certain projects, such as the kitchen towels; but, for something I want specifically "arty", I can use my design software.  I am a very low level user with the software.  If someone had any sketching ability, it would be a fabulous tool.  Unfortunately, that's not me.  I stick with what I can do.

My idea is to buy stretched canvases and stretch my collages around them.
For the collages, I am using a variety of background pieces and then interesting strips leftover from my past raw edge work.  I will be adding some embroidered patches, buttons and some beads where they will enhance the design concept.

Here are some progress photos from the 1st collage:

I'm using some leftover pieces of bleached muslin from flour sack towels I stitched earlier.  The frayed selvedge really appealed to me.

I am limited by the size of the hoop so I have to rehoop in sections.  I love the perfect stitching with the imperfect fabric swatches.

Most of the piece has been stitched.  I'll go to the edges and flip the stitch direction.

This is a strip leftover from another raw edge piece.  The tiny bits of yellow really called to me.

A very thin purple cotton strip is paired with the chunky raw edge piece.

Tomorrow I'll post the finished piece.
When it is this much fun, it doesn't feel like work.

Out and About in Houston: Midtown and Downtown

Sunday was a glorious day in Houston. I had the weekend off so after church and brunch, Gene and I played tourist in our own city.

We went to Midtown which is southwest of the downtown area.  It's been reworked into a hub for loft living, dining and shopping.  I have a show there in mid November.
Here are a few funky sculptures outside a lawyer's office.  Fun!

The downtown area around the GR Brown Convention Center (where the Quilt Festival is held yearly) has a lovely open park area called Discovery Green.  This sculpture by Jean Dubuffet graces one of the sidewalks.   Houston has a lot of art by famous artists.  On another block is a black sculpture by Louise Nevelson.

The coleus is gorgeous!

These 36' concrete Beatles sculptures were crafted by the artist David Adickes.  He has a number of very notable sculptures in Houston and Huntsville.  All of his work is huge!

I have wanted to visit the Texas Art Asylum for a long time.  They currently have a 2 day show about death.  One of my artist friends has a piece in the show.

The outside of the building features graffiti type paintings.

My friend's piece is a steampunk skull.  Very cool.

In the lobby of Texas Art Asylum are these 2 cat heads.  Gene and I had to poke our heads inside for a photo!  He's such a good sport.  He loves adventures, exploring and going to new places.

Squinting into the sun!

Just a wonderful day!

Izzy's Quilt

A few highlights from the recent child's t-shirt quilt I quilted. It was on the frame when the needle went kaplunk!  Very improv looking machine quilting!  :-)

Studio View

Art show organizers can ask for all kinds of pictures before accepting artists into a show. They can, also, ask for a jury fee; which is a bit hard on the budget, especially when rejected from the show. Fortunately, I've been accepted for all the shows to which I have applied so I consider the fee the cost of doing business.

One of the latest requests was a view of my studio and work in progress. I thought you might like to see my studio/home too. As to be expected, the largest space is the studio. My house works very well for an artist studio which is what I had in mind when I purchased it in 2002. I'm so thrilled to be living my dream!

I was accepted for the show to which I sent these pictures.  It will be the 1st weekend in November.  Time to replenish stock from the last 3 day show.  That was a fabulous show!  I came home with one container lighter than when I left.

I've also picked up a few commissions for the fall season.

Hearts and Hands Market at MDUMC

I wasn't sure I could make my inventory fit in a 4 x 10 space but I think I have a marvelous arrangement!  I did leave some items home though.  This is a 3 day show with a preview party last night.

East End Houston TX: Our Lady of Guadalupe Church

Our Lady of Guadalupe Church
East End Houston TX

Just as I approached the church a Hummer limo arrived to deliver a wedding party.
On my next trip I will explore more.

One of many decorated buildings in the East End.  So vibrant and fun!

Raw Edge + Embroidery Wall Art

Some of my raw edge scraps combined with a little embroidered design makes a fun picture.

My new toy is an electric staple gun.  I see some more stretched wall art in my future!

Kitchen Art

One of the sets of towels I recently purchased had the stripes running vertically along the edge of the towel.  When you fold the towel into thirds, the stripes are inside.  What?  So I decided to turn the towel horizontally and embroider a kitchen picture on it.  It came out splendidly!  and I can use the other edge for a 2nd embroidery.

Big weekend:  The all day/all night East End Street Fest followed by a 3 day Hearts and Hands Market at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church (my home church).  I'm so anxious I have the right kind and amount of merchandise for both shows.

Longarm Quilting Machine Repair

Gene does so many wonderful and thoughtful things to help me.
Here he is working on my longarm; replacing a gear and the needle bar.
He's a mechanical wizard.  He just took the task at hand in stride.
"Like putting together a puzzle!"
Yea Gene!
