Colorful Apron

Another apron finished from a partial UFO.  The stripped section was already sewn so I added the top and pocket.  What a fun combination of colors and fabrics!

Patchwork UFO into an Apron

Once people find out I sew, they come out of the woodwork offering me bags of fabric.  In two recent bags were some fun pieces.  I decided to challenge myself to sew an apron from some of the fabrics.

The skirt of this apron was a good sized patchwork piece someone had sewn together.  It asked to be an apron & I thought that was a splendid idea.  Because of all the seams I lined it with a piece of blue gingham.  I had a long strip from a sheet that worked well for the ruffle.  The waistband is more patched fabric and a pretty plisse belt finishes off the apron.

Quite a nice little repurpose idea!  I may go through some of my own UFOs and see if any want to be aprons.

Once a Skirt, Now an Apron

Combined a cotton embroidered skirt with pillowcase parts for a darling apron!  Added a fabric sash.  Loving these polka dots!

Plaid Half Apron

The plaid is from a tablecloth so it naturally went on the bottom so I could take advantage of the sewn hems.
The daisy fabric is a sweet 90s vintage fabric
The rest of the fabrics were scraps given to me

I love it when a project comes together so easily!

I have a commercial pattern I am following for waist measurements.  I'll be able to have a variety of sizes available for sale.  This apron is an XL.

Reclaimed Half Apron

I love Half Aprons!  I think it's because I love gathered skirts. They are fun to sew and easy to wear.
I used the top of the shirt for my Tunic/Tabard apron.  The bottom of the shirt and sleeves were pressed into service on this apron.  I also dipped into my vintage fabrics.  sniff. sniff.  Their 15 Minutes of Fame were calling!

Tunic/Tabard Apron

I've started some preparations for the upcoming November art markets.  One item I am entertaining with more vigor than previous markets are aprons.  I have a few styles for which I want to make some prototypes to see about design & construction methods.  I was accepted in the reclaimed/repurposed category so I have to stay true to that requirement.  Otherwise I could sew a ton of aprons out of yardage.  But, really, what fun is that?

So, a man's shirt was repurposed into an apron.  I used some scraps at the very top of the heap for experimenting yesterday. I repurposed a pillowcase for the skirt section, the bias tape from some pillow shams, experimental paint piece from days of old.  It's a cute apron.  My home economics training questions how useful it really is for cooking and cleaning; that's always a struggle for me.
But, more importantly, I sewed this apron.  It's a step in a fun direction!
The leftover pieces of the man's shirt will be enough for a half gathered apron.  I purposely cut it so I could utilize the hem.  I like to think ahead.  :-)

What kind of aprons do you like and wear?

Sweet 1950s Baby Quilt

I recently picked up this commission from a church friend.  She wants it finished so she can give it to her soon-to-be born grandnephew at Christmas.  Isn't it just sweet?  Those of us who were born in the 1950s probably had a similar quilt.  I know I did.  I haven't hand quilted in years but I'm sure I remember how!

Improvisational TShirt Quilt: no. 2 Progress

It turns out this quilt was impossible to photograph well.  All the pictures came out with blue or purple tones.  I threw it on my bed and it looks more like itself.  It's not as rumpled or as bumpy as it looks.  The under quilts weren't exactly flat!

The scarves worked out alright.  The black one had some raised dotted areas that may have given my machine a little trouble.  I'll have to look more closely when I attach the binding.  Full of drape-so that's a plus!  The earthy comforting colors of the knit fabrics are appealing.  I like how the colors and prints play off of each other.

Why We Really Sew Quilts!

This spring I worked with one of my longstanding friends to help her finish a quilt for her great grandson's upcoming birthday.  Today she sent me this picture.  So precious!

Improvisational Quilt: TShirts no. 2

Following quickly on the heels of the last TShirt Quilt is the next one.  It even uses some of the cut pieces that didn't make it into the last one.  I was able to stop by a neighborhood consignment store today and pick up a nice bundle of 80¢ tshirts for accent pieces.  The men's tshirts are usually the solid colors and the female's shirts are the printed ones.  It's a nice ying/yang representing the flourish a woman gives to a man's life.  Or some such nonsense.  :-)

Lots of great colors and designs (and saved from the landfill)

The 1st strip is sewn.  It sets the tone of the quilt.

One of the new to me tshirts has a very handsome print.

It's not always as it seems.  For a few of the tshirt fabrics, the back looked more appropriate for the quilt's tone than the front.  Flip that baby over!

I'm going to experiment by using some scarves as the backing.  They are another good source of inexpensive fabric.  I can often find very large thrifted scarves for less than $3.00.  I think the scarves will pair nicely with the tshirt knits keeping the whole quilt soft and cozy.

So much fun!

Improv TShirt Quilt Finished!

Yea Baby!  Love this Tshirt Quilt!

I've wanted to sew a generic tshirt quilt for awhile now.
I'm glad I took this opportunity to do it!

Brent said, "WOW!  that was quick; must've been easy!"  Nothing like 50 years of experience to back you up.   :-)

Improv TShirt Quilt Progress

This is a great clothing recycling/reclamation quilt project.  When I have commissioned tshirt quilts to sew the recipient rarely wants the scraps.  Usually the backs and sleeves are leftover which have a very large amount of fabric in them.   I've been thinking about sewing some generic tshirt quilts to try out the idea of large blocks and minimal quilting.  When I saw the tattered condition of Brent's tshirt quilt sewn in the early 1990s, I decided his would be the first experimental quilt.  I'm sewing the 90" wide strips by domestic machine then assembling and quilting on the longarm.  So far I like the results!
