Halloween Sewing: Kitchen Towels

Time to start some Halloween sewing!

I'm abnormally early this year but I do have shows coming up soon. I'll be selling in the East End of Houston which is a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood & want to have enough merchandise for the Day of the Dead celebrations.

I'm eager to begin stitching all the Day of the Dead skulls and Virgin Mary embroideries I have collected for years.
To start, I embroidered some light stitched designs on a package of 6 grey flour sack towels. They are available for purchase.

My very best show to date!  Excellent sales!  Lovely people coming into my booth talking with me. So many warm compliments on my artwork.  Truly humbled!

Kitchen Towels: Home Sweet Home

Interesting how the background of the towel changed the whole look of the threads. Same threads used on both towels. Fun to see how that happens!

These towels have sold.

Tattoo Inspired Tote Bags

I reclaimed these embroidered panels from previously stitched pillows.  They are now happily living as tote bags.  Yea, I'm clever like that!  They are available for purchase.  Email me.  Or, if you are local to Houston, come see me at one of my art market shows.

The backs are multi-fabrics as is the lining.  Most fabrics have been reclaimed and/or repurposed. The embroidery designs are from the always Hip and Stylish, Urban Threads

Great Tote Bags!

Fairy Gardens

I enjoyed an evening meal Sunday with friends. On the way through the restaurant's patio I noticed a new little group of fairy gardens recently added. So adorable!

Art Market Schedule: Sept 9

I'll be selling at The Market at Sawyer Yards this Saturday, Sept 9th.  This is a juried maker/seller market for local Houston artists and craftspeople.  Sawyer Yards is one of the most concentrated areas for artists in Houston.  Wonderful place to be able to show and sell my artwork.

Pictures are from the July show.

Grocery Tote Bags: Dog themed

With upcoming fall art markets, I have been sewing more tote bags; especially designed for large grocery shopping trips.  They are very handy and help you avoid the clog of plastic bags in your cabinets.

Here are 2 with a dog theme.  Tote bags are sewn from predominantly reclaimed fabrics.

Very large tote bag
Drapery weight fabrics
machine embroidered saying

The back has a nice big pocket

Smaller tote bag
perfect as an everyday tote bag
2 pockets: front & back

Tote bags are Available for Purchase

Vogue Inspiration

Recently I was given a huge stack of Vogue magazines that spans about 10 years.  All are the 500-800 page Fall editions highlighting the latest fashions for the upcoming year.  Last night I sat down with one magazine from the stack.

I was immediately struck by the color compositions in some of the advertisements.  Professionals spend a great deal of money & effort to get our attention.  I think I can piggyback on the color stylists' ideas as quilt/collage art work inspiration.

Here are a few that looked possible.  Can you see the wonderful color schemes too?  :-)

What do you think?

Detail Photos: Long Collage Art Work

This wall hanging is about 39 x 58 inches.  The background/backing a heavy piece of drapery fabric with enough stability to be firm but not so thick it is hard to needle.  I am not using any batting & I may not even put on a backing.  I'll wait until I am finished to decide.

All the stitching is stitched with the longarm. I'm working down the section as I go. Then, moving to the next section.  In the end, there will be 3 sections.

When composing this style of work, I am most interested in the little cast offs, the raw edges, the textures of the fabrics I choose.  Distressed is preferred.  :-)
